Genetic Testing Designed Around You

Deciding whether to test for the Huntington’s disease gene is one of the most personal choices a person from an HD family can make. We built HD Genetics to make that choice — and the entire process around it — easier, more private, and more compassionate.
Our Certified Genetic Counselor walks with you from your very first question to your results disclosure and beyond. No rushing. No cookie-cutter protocols. No unexpected charges. Just thoughtful, expert care from a team that lives and works inside the HD community.

How HD Genetic Testing Works

A clear, five-step process you can move through at your own pace. Most clients complete the full journey in 30 to 45 days.
1. Intake Form & Intro Call

Fill out our intake questionnaire — it takes about 5 minutes. Within a couple of days, you'll receive a text from our genetic counselor, Wes Solem, to schedule a brief intake call to confirm your interest, answer any questions, and book your first appointment.

Timeline: Days 1–10
2. No-Cost Genetic Counseling Session #1

A 45-minute to 1-hour virtual session with Wes Solem, our Certified Genetic Counselor. We'll discuss what testing involves, possible outcomes, your family situation, and any concerns. You only pay if you decide to proceed with testing after this session.

Timeline: Days 10–15
3. Saliva Kit Sent to Your Door

If you choose to move forward, we mail a saliva collection kit to the address you provide. It comes with simple instructions and a pre-paid FedEx return label. Provide your sample on your own schedule and drop it back in the mail.

Timeline: Days 15–24
4. Results Disclosure Session

Approximately three weeks after your sample arrives at the lab, we'll meet again virtually. Wes will share your results in a private, unrushed conversation and answer every question you have. You'll receive a copy of your test report and an HD resource guide.

Timeline: Days 35–45
5. Follow-Up & Continued Support

About a week after your results, we check in to see how you're doing. From there, you have lifetime access to our team — schedule additional conversations whenever you need, whether to revisit your results, discuss family planning, learn about clinical trials, or get connected to specialized HD care.

Timeline: Day 47 onward
Timelines are estimates. We never rush the process — you can take more time between steps if you need it.

Anonymous HD Testing — How It Works

Many people from HD families want to keep their genetic results out of their medical records and away from their insurance company. We support that choice fully.

If privacy is your priority, you can use a pseudonym (a fake name) throughout the entire testing process. We’ll walk you through what that means, the trade-offs to consider, and how to choose the path that fits your situation.

Understanding Your Results: The CAG Repeat

Huntington's disease genetic testing measures how many times a small DNA sequence — called a CAG repeat — appears in the HD gene. The number of repeats determines what your result means for you and your family.
26 or fewer repeats
Normal Range

Will not develop Huntington's disease. Children are not at risk.

27–35 repeats
Intermediate

Almost certainly will not develop Huntington's disease, but a small risk (about 2–5%) of passing an expanded gene to children.

36–39 repeats
Reduced Penetrance

May develop symptoms at an older age — but it's not certain. Each child has a 50% risk of inheriting the expanded gene.

40 or more repeats
Full Penetrance

Will develop symptoms of Huntington's disease in their lifetime. Each child has a 50% risk of inheriting the expanded gene.

Is HD Genetic Testing Right for You?

Our genetic testing service is designed for adults from HD families who are ready to explore predictive testing.

We currently do not test individuals under 18 years old. If you have a unique circumstance involving a child you suspect may have juvenile HD, please reach out to discuss.

If you’ve already been tested elsewhere, we still welcome you for a complimentary session to discuss your results — and our free Clinical Trial Connection service is open to you regardless of your testing history.

If you are not yet sure whether testing is right for you, that’s perfectly fine. You can speak with our counselor at no cost before deciding anything.

Payment Options

We're flexible about how you pay — and we never bill insurance.
Debit / Credit Card

All major cards accepted. Card details are processed securely and not stored by HD Genetics.

HSA / FSA Cards

Use your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account just like any other card.

Money Order

Prefer not to use a card? Mail us a money order — just ask our team for the address.

We do not bill insurance — and that's intentional. Keeping insurance out of the process means your results stay private. If you'd like to submit your receipt to your insurer for possible reimbursement after testing, we can provide guidance.

HD Genetic Testing FAQs: What to Know Before You Test

Quick answers to the most common questions about Huntington's disease genetic testing — from saliva test accuracy to insurance privacy and what happens if you change your mind partway through.
Yes. The saliva test we use has the same diagnostic accuracy as a blood draw for measuring CAG repeats in the HD gene. It's processed by our HIPAA-compliant partner laboratory.
You can stop the process at any point — even after you've provided your saliva sample. Some clients choose to have their sample held by the lab and only retrieve their results when they feel emotionally ready. Testing is your decision, on your timeline.
We do not share your results with any insurance company. Your results never appear in your medical record automatically. If you have existing life insurance or long-term care insurance in place before testing, it will not be affected. Your counselor can walk you through insurance considerations during your first session.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Having a trusted person with you during counseling and your results disclosure can be a meaningful source of support. Just let your counselor know in advance who will be joining.
